In the UK, the law allowing PGD is found within the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 as amended in 2008. The regulation of IVF and PGD rests with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). The licensing process is delegated to members of the Authority. While each member will bring personal and professional experiences to the table, a great demand is placed on them due to the complexity of the area. They must comprehend the law and the complex scientific genetic information of the condition. This is an area in which advances in science and increased public awareness increase demands on the committee members. This chapter seeks to give further insights into the areas the Committee must address. It will outline the science, the law, and the practical aspects of regulating applications for PGD.
