Comparative Study for Ascon Lightweight Hardware Security Algorithms in FPGA

Cryptography is one of the methods for securing data transport and communication over a network. Internet of Things (IoT) comprises physical objects embedded with sensors, advanced networking capabilities, RFID, and other technologies, enabling them to communicate and share data with other connected systems and devices over the internet. Unfortunately, normal Cryptographic algorithms such as AES tailored for traditional computing devices such as personal computers and cannot be straight forward applied in IoT systems due to its demand for high area and power. These factors make Lightweight Cryptography (LWC) introduced. One of the LWC algorithms that is Ascon has been selected as the main recommendation for lightweight authentication encryption in the final selection in The Competition for Authenticated Encryption: Security, Applicability, and Robustness (CAESAR) competition. In this paper, there are various hardware implementations of Ascon. It covers the encryption of Ascon using VHDL code from various designers and compares the performance of the encryption algorithm.
