The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 to 2022 may have begun as a worldwide health emergency yet it rapidly escalated into an economic and social catastrophe that rocked long-held assumptions about the benefits of globalization. The polycrisis also demonstrated the breadth of responsible investing by reviving the importance of the S category—social factors —in ESG. Diversity, equality, and resilience suddenly became daily experiences as the Black Lives Matter movement swept the US and Europe in 2020 and work-from-home practices changed our relationships with employers. At the same time, policymakers addressed the economic damage from lockdowns with trillions of dollars in fiscal aid, yet the measures stoked inflation to 40-year-highs and disrupted global supply chain disruptions. The period also amplified political polarization in the West. This chapter explains how responsible investing became an invaluable road map for navigating a turbulent new era.
