In 2020, amid the global upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, four higher education professionals came together to reimagine how they might respond to the rapidly evolving challenges facing their institutions—particularly those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Over the course of a year, the team engaged in immersive improvisational theater exercises as a method for collective reflection, sense-making, and professional growth. Through this process, they discovered that applied improv can be a powerful tool for DEI practitioners, enabling more meaningful, playful, and transformative conversations with campus leaders. Their work illustrates how improvisational frameworks can foster deeper connection, invite vulnerability, and cultivate authentic relationships—critical elements for advancing equity and systemic change in higher education.
