This chapter examines the role of women in Chile under Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, with a focus on the impact of women appointed as mayors during the dictatorship. Despite the fact that the military regime is frequently defined by its repressive and patriarchal structure, the deliberate placement of women in positions of local governance highlights the significance of women’s support for the dictatorship. Antonia Paredes examines how this strategy of the dictatorship may have contributed to the dictator’s gender-based popularity. The chapter analyses the first democratic elections for Congress and the subsequent local elections to illustrate how the presence of women in local governments throughout the dictatorship affected female representation by political coalitions during the democratic period.
