Concentric Square Slotted Four-Port MIMO Antenna Using EBG Decoupling Structure for 5G Applications

A method is proposed to achieve a high bandwidth and decrease the mutual coupling among two closely placed diffusing devices. Electromagnetic Bandgap Structure (EBG) is proposed as an effective method to decrease the mutual coupling between radiating elements of a MIMO antenna. Here, a microstrip transmission line in the form of a cross shape with E-shaped slits is used by incorporating a defective ground structure (DGS) to get a high bandwidth. Concentric square slots are inserted in the middle of the decoupling slab. The operational frequency range for the four-element MIMO antenna is 22 GHz to 34 GHz, and a 6 GHz bandwidth is obtained with better metrics such as S11 and VSWR. According to the modeling results from the ANSYS HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator), this proposed antenna is used in 5G applications.
