Malaysia’s sovereignty extends, beyond its landmass and Internal Waters, to a belt of sea termed the Territorial Sea of Malaysia. Beyond this legal concept Malaysia claims an Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf—natural and outer continental shelf, the latter requires scientific justification and the area free from any sovereignty and territorial dispute. Malaysia, in the parlance of the Law of the Sea may be termed a ‘zone-locked state’ as it is perceived to be restricted in its claim to full-widths of certain maritime zones in many geographical marine areas. This narrative, supported with 31 illustrations, discusses Malaysia’s maritime jurisdictional limits with a focus on its international maritime boundaries.
