Starting with Mickey’s Kangaroo (1935) and ending with Outback At Ya! (2019), Chapter 1 examines various productions by Walt Disney over the years that featured Australia, including animated cartoons and films, books, comic books and comic strips, displays, live-action movies and TV shows, and nature documentaries. While this image of Australia has been consistent, it has also been somewhat skewed and simplistic. For example, boxing kangaroos, irate “ostriches,” and out-of-control boomerangs have dominated Disney’s cartoons about Australia, and most of their live-action films and TV shows have showcased the country as an antipodean version of Main Street USA in Disneyland. Also, the First Nations People have been largely absent from Disney productions about Australia, even when the filmmakers wanted to include them. Nevertheless, this image of the country carried weight since Disney has been pervasive in Australian popular culture and everyday life since the early 1930s.
