The book chapter is aimed at examining the role and importance of the remote-sensing approach to assess the climate-change impacts on coral reefs in the Red Sea. It provides a comprehensive overview of how to use remote-sensing data to determine the detection of change in coral cover, mapping, and monitoring of climatic factors, especially heat waves, and their effects. Particular focus is placed on the importance of processing long-term climatic data in time series analysis of these climatic factors and their impact on coral reefs. The worldwide decline in coral reefs needs an extensive plan to monitor, track, and assess the subsequent impacts on the reefs and requires an effective tool. This chapter considers the state-of-the-art technologies of climate-change remote sensing for assessment of the diverse range of impacts on coral reefs for management, ranging from the reef composition (physical extent, and benthic cover), to environmental parameters. It includes introductory overviews of the main types of remotely sensed data used to study coral reefs, followed by specific examples demonstrating practical applications of the different technologies being discussed. It is illustrated with examples of each sensing technology applied to a range of scientific, monitoring, and management questions in reefs around the Red Sea. As such, this chapter is broadly accessible to anyone working with coral-reef ecosystems.
