Legitimacy in Interaction: Hierarchical Dynamics and Social Moral Dilemmas

This study delves into the erosion of government legitimacy through the prism of urban ethnography, focusing on a high-end Mexican nightclub to examine how cultural practices and hierarchical dynamics impede the enforcement of laws protecting minority rights, specifically employees with dwarfism. Utilizing non-participant observation, it uncovers the conflict between societal norms and legal frameworks, presenting a scenario where laws fail not due to moral deficiencies but because of their inability to align with hierarchical, deep-rooted cultural values. The concept of “social moral dilemmas” is introduced, illustrating the practical challenges laws face in complex social environments. This research highlights the necessity of considering cultural and interactional dynamics in understanding government legitimacy, advocating for a more pragmatic approach that encompasses the government’s capacity to ensure basic rights within the societal moral fabric. It urges further academic exploration into how cultural norms shape law enforcement and policy effectiveness, underscoring the importance of bridging the gap between legal intentions and societal realities for the betterment of governance and social justice.
