The Project Community

In this chapter, we will describe the basis of the project “Community” as an example of the success of Physical Activity and Sports programmes in promoting the empowerment of refugees and people seeking asylum from a pedagogical approach. Nevertheless, after the introduction, we will briefly review the similar experiences that inspired and theoretically underpin this project and what kind of organisation and persons the project needs to work it out. On the other hand, then we will explain the background of this project regarding the precedent applications that have been released in prisons, psychiatric centres, or special schools in different places. After that, we will explain the project Community, describing its specific goals, the procedure, and the main actions to take before, during, and after the project implementation. Also, we will define the characteristics of the group of refugees and students who participated in the project, the institutions and organisations responsible for them, and the roles and functions of the persons in charge of them. Besides, we will explain the programme’s structure in a learning-service context applied at the University of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) in collaboration with associations or foundations that tutor refugee people in the Barcelona area.
