Business processes are typically represented with graphical models. This can make engaging with them a challenge for people with visual disabilities. It is unclear whether existing tools are used by and meet the requirements of those users. In general, little research has focused on making business process models more accessible. Based on this observation, this study explores how blind and low-vision users currently understand and model business processes. Utilising a Grounded Theory methodology, we analyse qualitative data obtained from interviews at German educational institutions where business process modelling is taught to blind and low-vision students. The empirical results give insights into process modelling tools used in practice, their limitations, and how collaborative process modelling can become more inclusive. We find that textual, tactile but also visual models are in use. While there are common challenges, blind and low-vision users have individual preferences and strengths and, therefore, require a diversity of approaches beyond visual modelling to understand and create business process models.
