Does MRI Contribute to the Accuracy of Thymoma Diagnosis?

The differential diagnosis for anterior mediastinal masses encompasses a wide range of benign and malignant disease processes which are frequently thymic in origin. Imaging plays a central role in the initial assessment of suspected thymoma and other thymic lesions. Computed tomography is frequently the initial modality to demonstrate the findings and may occasionally favor a specific etiology or provide a definitive diagnosis. For patients who are diagnostic dilemmas, magnetic resonance imaging of the chest may allow more complete tissue characterization, thereby complementing the work-up and increasing diagnostic accuracy. MRI increases the accuracy of thymoma diagnosis by allowing more reliable identification of actionable thymic lesions. MRI represents a valuable imaging modality in the comprehensive evaluation of thymic tumors, offering detailed anatomical and functional information that can guide clinical decision-making and optimize patient outcomes.
