India has made significant strides in the realm of organic farming, showcasing remarkable progress in sustainable agricultural practices. Innovative forms of nanomaterials have the potential to revolutionize agriculture by making it more sustainable and efficient. These can enhance crop production, improve soil quality, and mitigate environmental challenges. Consequently, biological materials like microbes or plant extracts by green synthesis can produce nanobiofertilizers, leveraging natural sources for sustainable agricultural practices. Organic farmers face the challenge of increasing yields while simultaneously combating diseases and maintaining chemical-free practices. In selecting nanomaterials for organic farming, it is crucial to consider types—metal and nonmetal—and method of synthesizing physical, chemical, or green synthesis. Before their comprehensive testing, nanofertilizers and nanopesticides present potential risks to both organisms and the environment. The present chapter provides an overview of toxicity of nanomaterials and safety considerations in organic farming, delineating which types are deemed safe and which pose potential risks to agricultural ecosystems. Balancing innovation with safety will be key to the successful integration of nanotechnology into agricultural practices.
