The sixth chapter, How to Intercept, Support and Recount Migration, explores the methodological approaches, research design, and actions implemented to investigate undocumented Sudanese migration networks. This chapter describes the tools and methods used and delves into the epistemological considerations that guided field access and the researcher’s positioning. The investigation led to a critical analysis of various aspects of the research process, including the relationship between experiencing and understanding migration, the researcher’s potential role in supporting migrant movements and survival, and the exchange of institutional and underground knowledge. The chapter begins by discussing the rationale for employing multisite ethnography to engage with subjects across different locations along their routes. It then details the militant and collective ethnography conducted in collaboration with the activist group Progetto20k. Finally, it addresses issues of critical whiteness and privilege, considering the researcher’s identity as a white cisgender man studying migration, and offers a critical examination of migration terminology and representations.
