The third chapter, Sombok Is a Journey for Life: The Sudanese Culture of Migration, explores the phenomenon of sombok, the undocumented journey across the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, it discusses the culture of migration among students at the University of Khartoum, examining the social practices and meanings that shape these phenomena. It then addresses the concept of sombok through the narratives of individuals who abandoned their migration attempts and returned to Sudan. Family relationships and their influence on migrating are also introduced and discussed. The chapter presents recurrent themes identified during digital ethnography on sombok Facebook groups. Further, it uses gender and its social construction as analytical lenses to discuss the migration phenomenon among university students. The final section presents critical perspectives, highlighting issues related to societal and religious obligations and the challenges of adapting to new societies.
