摘要

I argue that adaptation ought not to be regarded as a secondary, parasitic, or subsidiary activity, with fidelity as the primary or sole criterion for success. I review my conclusions respecting the practice of adaptation from the perspective of the adaptor and the audience and discuss whether it is productive to regard adaptors as author-creators. I return to the persistent influence of the translation model, expressed in terms of audience expectations, and close with some suggestions for applying this relevance theoretic approach to adaptation.
