Intramedial Adaptation

Here I explore intramedial adaptations: works based on other works in the same medium. Intramedial adaptations offer different possibilities to transmediations; furthermore, ‘equivalence’ is less important, though the adaptor’s attitude is crucial. Adaptors may endorse the source work, or reappraise it; they may express admiration through imitation, or contest the manifestly intended interpretation. The translation metaphor that dominates general discussions of adaptation fails to shed light on these kinds of works, which I take to include sequels, serials, and remakes. Throughout, I make the case that a relevance theoretic approach allows us to draw fine distinctions without the need for additional terminology.
