Ocean Connections, a two-channel video installation with sound, is the result of an interdisciplinary artistic research project initiated by the SciArt project at the JRC of the European Commission. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s concept of sympoiesis—“making with,” I wish to reflect on the eco-aesthetics and relational frameworks that guided the process of creating the work along with interdisciplinary discussions and resources from several knowledge fields that were prominent in the development of the work. The title Ocean Connections points to how a local situation which in this case is the Oslofjord, has a global relevance as many of the ecological processes are similar, affecting biodiversity and ecological balance in the fjord. The swan-like shape of the fjord has inspired the visuals along with Lagrangian Descriptor modelling of the pathways showing movements of life and matter in the fjord, providing a visual storytelling device that is the core of the work. Other elements are added in a layered collage technique that allows for combinations of materials sourced from different contexts.
