Mouse and rat models have been created that carry most of human chromosome 21 (HSA21). These models have a nearly complete set of HSA21 genes and show little or no mosaicism. Transcript levels of HSA21 genes are regulated similarly to their mouse counterparts (orthologs) reflecting levels in Down syndrome-derived cells. Surveys of phenotypes reflect Down syndrome -related features that also occur in other mouse models. Rat tissues are generally more accessible than those in mice and rats historically have provided a rich and sensitive platform for behavioral studies involving learning and memory and for preclinical testing of pharmaceuticals.
