摘要

Exploring the synergy between Higher Education (HE) and sustainability means unveiling a dynamic relationship that transcends the static description which is traditionally discussed in the literature. HE institutions, once seen solely as knowledge-disseminating centres, have evolved into pivotal contributors to sustainability, and this transformation is far from being linear and one-sided in its trajectory. In fact, contemporary education’s mandate extends beyond individual development to encompass a larger societal canvas. Sustainability, as an extensive concept, integrates effortlessly into this narrative: it touches upon the ecological, social, economic, and cultural dimensions that define our world, demanding a comprehensive understanding and commitment. This book serves as a pivotal moment. It beckons citizens, academics, and policymakers to broaden their perspective, understanding the intricate interplay between HE and sustainability. Within these pages, key dimensions and dynamics come to light, showing how these interconnections contribute in steering humanity towards a sustainable future. The complex, dynamic and circular interactions among the HE and Sustainability stakeholders will be represented through the “5-cycles model” described in this chapter.
