The digitalization of the legal system and the business of law has brought numerous benefits, including increased efficiency and accessibility. However, as the legal industry continues to introduce technology (Legal Tech), it is crucial to consider the sustainability of these practices. This article argues that sustainable law requires sustainable digitalization (digitalization refers to the broad concept of not only digitizing legal content but also transformation and rethinking processes and (legal) business models with regard to the possibility of computational methods) of the law and the legal system with all its aspects (this includes the legislative, judicial, and executive tasks and—ultimately—also the business of law and the digitalization efforts undertaken in the legal market). It explores five dimensions of sustainability that must be considered when developing a legal digitalization framework, from economic to regulatory sustainability. During the article these five dimensions are combined in an integrative framework that considers the interconnectedness of these dimensions: Sustainable Digital Transformation Framework (SDTF) for legal. While there is no doubt that digitalization has transformed the legal industry, we cannot ignore the potential negative impacts of unsustainable practices. As such, the article emphasizes the importance of a mindset shift towards digital sustainability. It emphasizes the importance of culture, strategy, and the mindset of digital transformation, which is the baseline for the SDTF for legal. This article aims to stimulate further discussion and action towards a sustainable digitalization of the law, ultimately promoting a more resilient and responsible legal profession.
