Towards Automation: News-Wrap Implementation at Malawi’s Nation Publications
摘要
Although it is evident that technologies have revolutionized the media industry, there is still a paucity of literature on the kinds of technologies being adopted in African newsrooms and the ways they are utilised and transforming newsroom culture and practice. Using a case study of Malawi’s leading print media, Nation Publications Limited (NPL), we focus on technologies for running and managing newsrooms by investigating how the organisation’s decision to purchase newsroom software programme called News-Wrap, transformed its newsroom processes and journalism culture and practice. The main objective was for the organisation to automate its newsroom processes and go paperless to cut on stationery costs and improve efficiency in newsroom processes, including staff assessments. News-Wrap allows all newsroom staff (reporters, copy editors, editors and designers) to interact online from pitching news story ideas to the point of publication. This is the first of its kind software in a Malawian traditional newsroom to have attempted to automate the whole news production process, and therefore, it is imperative to understand its impact to both journalism and newsroom culture and practice and what it means to the future of journalism. Through interviews with system users (journalists, editors and designers) and the management, we analyse the step-by-step operational system of the software and examine its impact on both journalism and newsroom culture and practice. We further explore some of the challenges of adopting such technologies in developing newsrooms like NPL.
