Spirituality is an essential element of patient-centred healthcare, and its role in improving patients’ quality of life and quality of care has emerged as an important issue in clinical practice. Spiritual themes often arise in the clinical setting, and many patients desire spiritual care from physicians and other healthcare professionals. The first step to providing quality spiritual care involves demonstrating a genuine interest and compassion while communicating with patients about spiritual issues. Healthcare professionals should seek to create environments of trust, in which patients and their families feel comfortable sharing spiritual concerns with the care team. A spiritual history, screening, or assessment can be used to formally assess patients’ spiritual and/or religious beliefs. The goal of the spiritual history is to listen to patients’ spiritual narratives, providing them with a space to share about their hopes, despair, and sense of meaning—as well as what they find to be truly important. Once a spiritual issue has been diagnosed, the clinician then decides how best to integrate that into the treatment or care plan. Ideally, an interdisciplinary healthcare team, including a board-certified chaplain or spiritual care professional as the spiritual care expert, develops a treatment or care plan for the patient.
