In the dynamic realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), ensuring that AI systems resonate with human values is a critical endeavour. OpenAI stands at the vanguard of AI innovation, advocating for the imperative of aligning AI technologies with the multifaceted spectrum of human values. This alignment, however, is challenged by the vast complexity and variability of these values. Our presentation at the HCI International 2024 conference introduces a novel approach to AI alignment inspired by Ubuntu, an African philosophy encapsulated by the ethos “I am because we are.“ This philosophy highlights individuals’ fundamental interconnectedness and interdependence within a community, advocating for the primacy of collective values and harmony. We propose that integrating Ubuntu principles into AI alignment processes presents a revolutionary shift in perspective—from an emphasis on individualistic values to a collective value framework. This is particularly relevant for initiatives focused on super alignment, where AI's societal impacts are profound and far-reaching. Our Ubuntu-Inspired approach calls for an alignment strategy that not only respects but actively incorporates diverse cultural ethics, champions communal well-being, and cultivates symbiotic relationships between humans and AI. Our presentation will detail the development of a conceptual framework designed to operationalize Ubuntu principles within AI alignment. This framework proposes a multidimensional assessment scale that evaluates AI systems’ adherence to principles of communal harmony, ethical interdependence, and cultural inclusiveness. Furthermore, it positions empathy, sustainability, and conflict resolution as core pillars of AI systems aligned with Ubuntu philosophy. We argue that embracing Ubuntu in OpenAI's super alignment endeavours could lead to the creation of AI systems that are not only technically advanced but also profoundly attuned to and respectful of human values, cultural diversity, and the communal good. Such an approach is in harmony with the HCI community's objectives of fostering technologies that are user-centric, ethically grounded, and socially advantageous.
