A Study on the Application of Game Techniques to Increase Virtual Human Immersion

Recently, with the increasing interest in the metaverse and artificial intelligence, various studies on virtual beings are being conducted. A virtual being refers to a virtual existence created through virtual reality software, not an actual person. It is referred to by various names. However, in virtual human avatars, there are still awkward movements present. This paper investigates the applicability of game technology to improve such awkwardness. The aim is to provide realistic and natural visual and auditory immersion through the adjustment of movements, sounds, and camera effects based on user behavior and interaction. In particular, we propose natural character movement in diverse terrains using inverse kinematic rigging. In the case of forward kinematic rigging, the movement of the legs appeared awkward on stairs and slopes, and the camera movements were also unnatural. However, characters with inverse kinematic rigging exhibit natural movements on stairs and slopes, guiding the camera to move ideally and providing users with a higher level of immersion. Ascending and descending stairs, standing, and navigating inclines and declines with characters using inverse kinematic rigging demonstrated more natural movements. These research findings suggest that game technology can be effectively utilized to enhance the immersion of virtual beings. The results anticipate technological advancements in enhancing the overall virtual human experience in the future.
