This big chapter is dealing with special conditions of the skin rather than with specific diagnoses. There may be several different dermatoses inducing itching, redness of the face or of total skin (erythroderma), swelling of the legs, or primary or secondary pathological accumulation and deposition of materials in the extracellular matrix of the dermis or subcutis. Age, nutrition, and pregnancy have a great influence not only on the types of dermatoses developing in these groups but also on the general structure of the skin. Most of the about ten neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect the skin. They may appear as so called “travel dermatoses” in people returning from vacations in tropical or subtropical areas or are sometimes neglected medical problems in rural, underserved areas of these parts of the world. NTDs are dealt with in more details in Part X.
