The Role of ICTs in a Region’s Development and Sustainability. The Case of Island Regions
摘要
The main reason for the slow growth of island regions is their spatial discontinuity, which makes it extremely difficult to attract economic activities. Various attempts to alleviate this discontinuity by improving transportation infrastructure and means have proved ineffective and a more radical approach is needed. One such approach could be to overcome it by creating a communication network where there is no discontinuity. In this case an island region would be able to direct its economic development toward services (i.e. financial and insurance services, software development) which may be produced locally and sold to customers located all over the world. Necessary prerequisites for the success of such a plan would be the availability of technology to support it but also the attitude of both employers and employees toward the new working conditions. The technological progress of recent years and the health crisis of Covid-19, which have brought about changes in work environments around the world, seem to have made it possible to create such a communication network. The paper examines how these developments may contribute to the growth and sustainability of an island.
