The Evolution of Mykonos Island as an LGBTQ Destination Through Time. Fostering Change Management Attitude for the Future Development of LGBTQ Tourism in Mykonos
摘要
The famous Greek island of Mykonos is widely considered an open-minded destination that shows no discrimination to any visitor, regardless of ethnicity, religion, origin, or sexual orientation. Mykonos was put on the tourist map in the mid-late ‘60 s. Although Greek society was very conservative during this period, Mykonos Island, with its inhabitants, carved out a new, innovative, and revolutionary path, highlighting Mykonos as a friendly destination for the gay community. This paper aims to investigate how Mykonos Island has evolved as an LGBTQ destination over the past decades. In addition, this paper will examine the benefits of LGBTQ tourism on local communities and the changes managers have to implement for the future development of LGBTQ tourism in Mykonos Island. Which infrastructures, services, regulations, and laws have been developed to create Mykonos’ brand as one of the most gay-friendly travel destinations in the entire world? This is only one of the research questions that the authors aspire to answer.
