Analyzing papers published in high-ranking journals over an extended period reveals how the field has transformed, highlighting scholar’s concerns and the industry’s issues during those years. This review can also identify long-standing issues that remain unresolved or topics needing continuous research and future attention. In this case study, we review papers published in the Tourism Management journal over the last 40 years to identify trends, researchers’ concerns in each decade, and future directions. Tourism Management, a renowned scholarly journal, specializes in publishing peer-reviewed, and empirical research in travel and tourism management, with a specific focus on planning and policy. This study conducted a thorough analysis, using bibliometric methodologies and content analysis, to assess key topics discussed in this journal during the last 42 years. The analysis highlights a significant evolution in focus and priorities, driven by global changes, technological advancement, and sustainability concerns. Over the decades, the research agenda become increasingly interdisciplinary, integrating insights from various fields to address complex issues in tourism management. Technological advancements and major crises reflected in the publications and sustainability emerged as a central theme from the 2000s onwards, evolving into a core concern that continues to influence the research agenda.
