Biochar: A Revolutionizing Approach for Turning Waste into Value Through Pyrolysis
摘要
Waste management is a global challenge, and biochar, a carbon-enriched composite, has emerged as a sustainable solution. It is synthesized through pyrolysis of organic biomass at elevated temperatures, transforming various types of waste into valuable products. Biochar has applications in improving soil health, remediating contaminated water, and improving heavy metal uptake in phytoremediation, catalysis, and energy generation. However, concerns about biochar toxicity persist, and commercialization is challenging. The properties of biochar depend on the pyrolysis method used, with different temperatures yielding different biochar compositions. This chapter provides an overview of biochar production, characterization, factors affecting its properties, applications, toxicity, and commercialization. Despite these benefits, concerns regarding biochar toxicity persist, and the commercialization of biochar production and use faces challenges.
