Plastic has a lot of beneficial uses, but we've become dependent on single-use items, which is bad for the economy, society, environment, and health. Globally, a million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and up to five trillion plastic bags are used each year. 50 percent of all plastic produced is meant to be used in one-time situations. Developing nations have faced challenges in managing the waste generated by plastic as a result of rising plastic manufacturing and use. So, more plastic garbage is being sent to developing countries, most of it which is difficult to recycle and end up in water channels, rivers, and finally oceans. Also, developing countries lack good strategies for managing plastic waste due to their large populations. This chapter covers integrated plastic waste management as well as the environmental implications of various plastic waste sources. Additionally, it also explains the difficulties faced by the developing nations in managing their plastic garbage.
