Despite the fact that pancreatic surgery is currently associated with low mortality rates in high-volume centers, morbidity has remained relatively high. Although the vast majority of postoperative complications are not life-threatening, they can result in prolonged hospitalizations and healthcare expenditures, and delays in adjuvant therapy for cancer patients, which have been proven imperative. Consensus groups, such as the International Study Group of Pancreatic Surgery, have attempted to standardize the complication definitions of major complications associated with pancreatic surgery and offered a grading system based on severity and treatment options. However, there are several additional complications which result in severe morbidity after pancreatic surgery. In this chapter, we seek to address the short-term complications associated with pancreatic surgery including surgical site infections, biliary fistulas, chyle leaks, and gastrointestinal anastomotic leaks after pancreatic resection. Postoperative pancreatic fistula, delayed gastric emptying, and post-pancreatectomy hemorrhage will be discussed in separate chapters.
