Messire François and the Wolf of Gubbio

The legend of St. Francis of Assisi’s intervention in the face of the wolf of Gubbio illustrates the paradigm of successful mediation between two seemingly irreconcilable worldviews. It is a way of operating that can be found in other historical traditions (Taoism, for example). This recourse to “disputatio” is distinct from the attitude of imposing a particular point of view by force or definitive arguments, seeking to dissuade or condemn anyone who persists in expressing a different point of view from the one being imposed.
