Examining Human–Robot Interactions: Design Guidelines for Trust and Acceptance

The widespread deployment of robotic systems like collaborative and assistive robots, autonomous vehicles, and social drones has been argued for on the basis of substantial economic, social, and environmental benefits. Robotic systems have been developed with the aim of improving safety, performance, mobility, accessibility, and overall user experience. However, the relevant engineering and computer science fields have mostly been concerned with the technical challenges of robotic system development so far. Many agree that for these systems to unleash their full potential, the public has to be convinced of their ability, integrity, and benevolence. This is the only way that the users will accept and adopt them. According to Actor-Network Theory (ANT), this social challenge is as urgent and important as any technical challenge, if not more, as public perception will ultimately decide the extent of robots’ adoption in society. ANT proposes to view technologies not as mere tools but as agents of social change and emphasizes the need to design them in ways that promote bilateral communication, interdependency, and trust. In this chapter, we outline design guidelines and present examples of socially responsible research and development efforts in assistive robotics, human–robot collaboration, and autonomous vehicles to illuminate a path forward for more ethical and sustainable integration of robotic systems.
