During embryological development, the primordial circulatory system begins to oxygenate tissue around week 3. The first structure to arise from the heart tube is the aortic sac, which feeds into the pharyngeal arches. By week 4, the fourth pharyngeal arch has begun to develop; this is the precursor for the arch of the aorta and the subclavian arteries. The final branch of the subclavian artery will later give rise to the dorsal scapular artery, oxygenating the musculature of the superficial back (Moore et al. 2010). A recognizable shoulder develops around week 10. The complex glenohumeral joint can be observed along with noted osteogenesis of the humeral head (week 10) and scapula (week 11) (Hita-Contreras et al. 2018). Its blood supply includes the axillary artery and scapular anastomoses including the dorsal scapular, suprascapular, and circumflex scapular arteries.
