Uterine Artery

The primordial heart and vascular system begin to develop in the middle of the third week of embryo development (Ozgüner and Sulak 2011). The arterial system arises from both ectoderm- and mesoderm-derived angiogenic cells. The aortic arches and right and left dorsal aortae unite to form the descending aorta, forming posterolateral intersegmental branches throughout the thorax (Ozgüner and Sulak 2011). As the dorsal aorta descends through the abdomen, branches are formed to the gastrointestinal and renal systems, including the intersegmental arteries (Ozgüner and Sulak 2011). The umbilical arteries also arise from the dorsal aorta but disconnect from it after anastomosing with the intersegmental arteries. The common iliac arteries then arise from the proximal portions of the patent umbilical arteries (Szpinda et al. 2012), and give rise in turn to the external iliac artery (Bergman et al. 2016). The fifth intersegmental artery (fifth dorsal branch of the aorta) anastomoses with the umbilical artery to develop the internal iliac artery (Bergman et al. 2016), which develops anterior and posterior divisions that subsequently give off further branches to the pelvic area. The vasculature of this region is initially formed through a capillary plexus (Bergman et al. 2016), which progresses into an arterial pattern thanks to the persistence of necessary vascular channels and the regression of other channels, forming the branches of the internal iliac artery, including the uterine artery (Bergman et al. 2016). The frequent variability in branching seen within the iliac vessels can be attributed to genetics and the vascular demands of tissues during later stages of development (Balcerzak et al. 2022).
