Vasculogenesis, the formation of blood vessels, begins with hemangioblasts in the yolk sac, which differentiate into two different cell types: angioblasts and hematopoietic progenitor cells (Aghi and Chiocca 2006). Angioblasts migrate from the mesoderm to specific portions of the embryo, where they form vascular plexuses of veins and arteries (Ribatti et al. 2015).
