The origin of the gonadal arteries is embryologically complex. They arise from lateral splanchnic branches of the aorta that enter the primitive kidney system, known as the mesonephros. The mesonephric arteries supply the developing gonads, suprarenal glands, diaphragm, and kidneys (Kayalvizhi et al. 2017). The gonadal arteries arise from one of these nine lateral mesonephric arteries (Hinata et al. 2015). This is inferred from Felix’s “ladder theory,” which proposes that all segmental mesonephric arteries persist as the definitive phrenic, adrenal, renal, accessory renal, gonadal, and accessory gonadal arteries (Felix 1912). The nine mesonephric arteries can be divided into cranial, middle, and caudal groups. The gonadal arteries develop from those branches, usually from one of the caudal mesonephric arteries; the others atrophy. The gonadal arteries lengthen as the sex glands descend and the kidneys ascend (Gupta et al. 2011). Anatomical variations in the gonadal arteries can result from variations in origin between the three groups of mesonephric arteries (Hinata et al. 2015).
