During the development of the kidneys, the renal blood supply changes (Moore and Persaud 1998). Initially, it comes from branches of the common iliac arteries; later, it comes from the distal end of the aorta (Moore and Persaud 1998). As the kidneys ascend during development, newer branches arise from a higher level of the aorta (Moore and Persaud 1998). The caudal branches normally involute (Moore and Persaud 1998). By the ninth week of development, the kidneys meet the suprarenal glands and become fixed in their position (Moore and Persaud 1998). The most cranial branches become the permanent renal arteries (Moore and Persaud 1998).
