Throughout much of the twentieth century, most knowledge of the lymphatic system was based on studies that used mercury injection to map the channels. Given mercury’s toxic effects, safer techniques have since been established, mainly using lymphangiography, to better our understanding of the anatomy of lymphatic channels (Suami et al. 2007; Kinmonth 1952).
