Veins, like arteries, are derived from mesenchymal tissue originating from the mesodermal germ layer of the developing embryo. During development, the superficial veins of the upper extremity develop from a plexus of capillaries, which fuse and enlarge. The ulnar capillary plexus develops into the basilic, axillary, and subclavian veins. The radial capillary plexus atrophies; the cephalic vein develops from an anastomotic channel of the external jugular vein (Araujo et al. 2018).
