The maxillary artery is the larger of the terminal branches of the external carotid artery (Figs. 10.1 and 10.2). It is responsible for perfusion of both the deep muscles and the bones of the face, and it contributes to the perfusion of intracranial structures such as the dura. Overall, it is a particularly important vessel for multiple surgical subspecialties including neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and oral-maxillofacial surgery.
