A Study on the Relationship Between Calculated Amorphous Phase from XRD Patterns and Compressive Strength: A Non-laboratory-grade Activator in Geopolymer Cement

This study investigates the correlation between calculated amorphous phase, determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and compressive strength in geopolymer cement (GP) using a non-laboratory-grade NaOH activator. Results show a consistent trend between %amorphous phase and compressive strength of GP mixtures. Laboratory-grade activators yield the highest %amorphous phase and compressive strength. Conversely, non-laboratory-grade activators (industrial-grade and non-grade activators) exhibit a decline in strength with lower %amorphous content, although they cost approximately 85% less. Two classes of industrial-grade NaOH activators, industrial-grade activators I and II, have a slightly lower average strength (− 11.3%) and reduced amorphous content (− 0.73%) compared to laboratory-grade counterparts. Additionally, the application of %amorphous phase through XRD analysis emerges as an alternative method for evaluating geopolymer cement properties, potentially enhancing its feasibility and commercial viability as an alternative construction material for practical applications.
