Climate Change vis-á-vis Human Livelihood and Agriculture in NW Himalaya
摘要
The mountain agro-ecosystem is seriously affected by the population density in northwest HimalayaNorthwest himalaya with 25.9 million people representing 48.5% of the total population of Himalaya. The people living in Himalaya are aware of the serious implications of depletion and threat to biological diversity considering the growing population and climate change. Changes in the availability of water due to altered winter and summer precipitation, decreasing winter snowfall and strengthening summer monsoon, show a pattern of reduced NDVI during the early growing season, and increased NDVI towards the end of the growing season. The increase in agriculture production in the state of Himachal PradeshHimachal pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu & KashmirUnion territory of Jammu and Kashmir by 7% over the period from 1970 to 2004, is attributed to the improvement in the facilities of irrigation and introduction of cash crops in the cropping pattern. Crop diversification towards fruits and vegetables are becoming important components of the cropping pattern in the changing climate. The natural and/or anthropogenic degradation has implications on the food production, water resources and human health of the region, in general, and society, in particular. The projected changes in precipitation in Himalaya shall favour both, droughts and floodsFloods, in future with consequences on the food production.
