Graveler - Global Awareness Education Through Virtual Voyages
摘要
This paper examines the course “What is Globalization?” offered through the Global Awareness Education program at the University of Tübingen, which seeks to transcend the typical media focus on the economic dimensions of globalization. Instead, this fully online course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the complex effects of globalization on politics, cultures, the environment, and interpersonal interactions across diverse global communities. Utilizing the 2D, web-based, role-play serious game Graveler - Globe Traveler - as both a learning and communication platform, the course employs a “virtual trip around the world” didactic concept. Presented here are the findings from four classes conducted since 2023 using this innovative educational approach. We detail the capabilities of Graveler that enhance student learning experiences and discuss the methodology and outcomes of our study, including a quantitative survey on the game’s acceptance and a qualitative analysis of students’ final assignments to assess learning outcomes. Additionally, we explore the Graveler backend, which allows users to create their own virtual journeys on topics beyond globalization, and discuss potential applications of this tool.
