Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in the United States and the third most common cause of cancer related deaths worldwide. Gastric cancer is more common in Asian countries and in individuals of Asian descent. Incidence of gastric cancer in the United States has been on the decline over the past few decades mainly due to improved diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori, and lifestyle modifications. Treatment modalities include a combination of surgical resection, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Diagnosis at an early stage and appropriate surgical resection are cornerstones in curative treatment of gastric cancer. This chapter overviews key points that will aid in diagnosis of gastric cancer and summarizes current therapies involved in the treatment of gastric cancer.
