Small bowel obstruction (SBO) makes up nearly 16% of surgical admissions and 300,000 operations annually in the United States. Two-thirds of all mechanical SBOs are due to postoperative adhesions. Other etiologies can range from extraluminal, intraluminal, and intrinsic obstructions from bowel wall lesions. Determining the underlying cause of obstruction will help dictate an appropriate treatment plan.
