This chapter discusses surgical site infections (SSIs). A patient may present to you with obvious local signs of wound infection at a recent surgical site, or undifferentiated sepsis in the postoperative setting (in clinic, emergency department, or still as inpatient). If presented with a SSI oral board case, the purpose is usually twofold: first, examiners want to see that you have a high index of suspicion for a postoperative wound infection and, second, that your management is prompt and appropriate. The following will be discussed: relevance of timing of presentation, common exam findings, workup, treatment, differential diagnoses, and curveballs.
