Molluscum contagiosum is a viral dermatological condition typically transmitted through direct skin contact. It presents as painless, skin-colored lesions. This disease is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), part of the poxvirus family. Although it most commonly affects children and young adults who are sexually active, it may also impact individuals across all age groups. The presence of numerous lesions often indicates an underlying immunocompromised state, such as in cases of HIV. Vertical transmission of the virus from mother to child during delivery is also possible. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, with no standardized therapeutic protocols currently available. Nevertheless, various treatment options exist, while many cases resolve spontaneously. In the absence of specific recommendations, the primary preventive strategy is to avoid direct skin contact with lesions.
